Good morning MTS Families:
Please read the following for the upcoming visitors.
Hello Muckleshoot Tribal School Parents and Guardians,
Our Muckleshoot Tribal School is partnering with Education Northwest, an education nonprofit, to conduct a school wide evaluation. This evaluation is a process for collecting information from students, teachers, staff members, families, and community members to identify what the school is doing well and how it can improve. From this evaluation, Education Northwest will provide recommendations for improving the school’s policies and practices to support students. As part of Education Northwest’s research process, they are planning to conduct a survey and focus groups with middle and high school students.
Education Northwest will be on-site at our Muckleshoot Tribal School to work with us from Monday, September 22nd through Friday, September 26, 2025. Muckleshoot Tribal School Parents and Guardians will have an opportunity to participate in a focus group with Education Northwest on Wednesday, September 24, 2025 from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. during our MTS Culture Night (please refer to the attached flyer).
Education Northwest (EDNW) is a nonprofit organization based in Portland, Oregon that has partnered with schools, districts, and Tribes across the country for nearly 60 years. Education Northwest’s mission is to work alongside communities to strengthen education through research, evaluation, and culturally responsive practice.
With the direct guidance and support from the Muckleshoot Tribe, EDNW’s educational system evaluation project: “is designed to listen to and learn from students, families, and staff so we can understand what’s working well and where additional supports may be needed. The goal is to uplift student success while respecting Muckleshoot culture, values, and sovereignty.”
The Evaluation Project: “This project is about collecting meaningful feedback, honoring multiple perspectives, and working together to highlight strengths and opportunities for growth. The evaluation team will conduct surveys, focus groups, interviews, and classroom visits in ways that are collaborative and respectful. Findings will be shared back with the school, community and Tribal leadership for additional input and meaning making so that eventual reports and other tools reflect the true perspective and circumstance in the day-to-day and long term efforts at work in the Muckleshoot Tribal School.”
Meet the Evaluation Team from Education Northwest:
RunningHorse Livingston is a Managing Consultant at EDNW and a long-time educator and instructional coach in mathematics. He has worked with schools and Tribal communities across the country to support student learning, with a focus on culturally grounded teaching and Indigenous education.
Mandy Smoker Broaddus, Senior Leader, is a nationally recognized leader in Indigenous education and equity. A citizen of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes, she brings decades of experience as a teacher, state education director, and consultant. At EDNW, she helps guide projects that center Tribal sovereignty, culture, and student voice.
Emi Fujita-Conrads is a Senior Advisor at EDNW with deep experience in program evaluation and culturally responsive research. She has worked closely with Tribal nations and communities throughout the Pacific Northwest and is committed to ensuring that evaluation practices are equitable and community-driven.
The team from Education Northwest is honored to partner with Muckleshoot Tribal School in this evaluation. Education Northwest looks forward to listening, learning, and working alongside you to celebrate successes and strengthen opportunities for all students.
I am looking forward to all of us working with our partners from Education Northwest in this exciting process of continuous improvement.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thank you very much.

MTS Attendance Team Reminders

Dear Families of our Muckleshoot Early Childhood Education Programs and our K-12 Muckleshoot Tribal School:
We are all experiencing the impact and significant delays that have resulted from the closure of the White River Bridge (Buckley Bridge) which carries State Route 410 between Buckley and Enumclaw. Our Muckleshoot Department of Education staff members have been collaborating with our First Student drivers and administrators and have been investigating possible impacts on transporting students, especially after 3:00 p.m.
The challenges identified include:
• Normal first day of school delays such as students locating their correct buses, drivers learning new students and identifying correct drop off locations
• Continued construction delays on Auburn Way South east of Chinook Elementary School
• Extensive traffic delays due to the White River Bridge closure in Buckley
In order to proactively address these challenges, the Muckleshoot Department of Education and First Student have:
• Identified the buses and areas most likely impacted
• Identified buses that may be able to provide backup
• Reviewed and re-routed buses away from high-traffic roads whenever possible
• Created notifications to inform families of late running buses
• Identified school staff members to provide additional support to students and families affected by the White River Bridge closure
Even with our best efforts there will be times when buses will be late. By working together we can ensure students arrive safely home as quickly as possible. Here are some ways you can help:
• Please be patient
• Avoid driving through the area during the high volume traffic times
• Please plan ahead if your child has an after-school event you cannot miss
• Check your text messages from our Muckleshoot Department of Education Programs for timely communication about any traffic related delays that impact our bus routes
• If your child must be met at the stop, plan ahead to receive them which helps avoid further delays for other families
• Communicate early by calling Muckleshoot Tribal School Transportation (253) 261-1329 or Muckleshoot Head Start (253) 876-3056 if you are unable to meet your child due to the traffic
• Prepare your child by talking to them about the potential of late running buses
• Have a backup plan that includes another responsible person to meet your child
We are all partners in successfully navigating through the challenges that we face with the closure of the White River Bridge. We are all in this together and through pre-planning and communication we will get through this successfully.
Thank you very much for all of your continued support!
Sincerely,
Joseph
